But First: Choosing the Right Go Pro For Your Travel Needs
If you don’t yet have your GoPro, you can’t go wrong with any of their recent models. The nice thing is that you don’t really need to comb through differing features, as each new camera released is just considered one step better than the last.
If you have no budget constraints, I recommend going for the latest GoPro Hero model – which is the Go Pro Hero 12. This is the one I have, and it is one step up on all the best features the GoPro offers. Plus it has a big improvement in battery life from the last model. It also comes with smarter stabilization and improved thermal performance.
If you are really seeking out the best bang for your buck, you can check out some earlier models, however, I wouldn’t go much further back than the GoPro Hero 10. This model was a huge step up from previous ones. The Hero 10 introduced a new processor that is still being used in the current models and is a much faster camera meaning you get higher video quality. They also added a water-shedding feature so that you don’t get as many water droplets in front of your lens.

1. A Handle for Easier Photo-Taking
The first thing I noticed when I got my new Go Pro was how strange it was to try holding and shooting with such a tiny camera. Purchasing a handle I could grip onto with a wrist strap as a bonus completely changed how I used my Go Pro camera.
There are several different versions of handles out there. It really depends on your preference. The one I purchased and have been loving is the: GoPro 3 Way 2.0. Official Mount. What starts as a single handle that is super comfortable, turns into a customizable tripod and has an extension arm for selfies. It’s versatile and easy to mount, that’s why I love it.

The other mount that was a close second for me is the Volta. It is a handle with a built-in battery extender. It has controls for taking pictures and videos on the handle itself and it plugs into the camera to 3X the battery life so it can last all day.

2. Spare Batteries to Extend Your GoPro Camera’s Life
This is probably my biggest recommendation for people traveling with their GoPro. GoPro batteries do not last long, so if you plan to take it out for the day, you’ll definitely want an extra battery or two charged and ready to go.
In addition to extending the time you can use it in a day, GoPro batteries sometimes simply stop working, especially if you have had yours for a while now. This happened to me in Mexico and there were very few stores where I could purchase a new one and of course, they were so much more expensive.
I recommend this set here because you’ll get 2 extra batteries plus a charger that allows you to charge them both at the same time. That way, you don’t have to wait and charge them each individually inside the camera.

3. Extra Memory Cards to Store Your Epic Action Shots
Depending on how much you intend to use your camera while abroad, it can be a great idea to grab an extra memory card or two to ensure you have enough storage for your epic GoPro footage. GoPro cameras don’t take normal SD cards, so you’ll need to ensure you get a microSD card. This 64 GB card should do the trick!

4. Hard Drive to Back Up Your Memory-Filled Photos
With both my GoPro and my regular camera, I always travel with some form of hard drive to back up my photos as I go. I once travelled to Thailand and due to an incident with my phone, I completely lost all of my photos afterward. I’ll never risk that happening again.

We’ve all experienced the disappointment of trying to take pictures from inside a vehicle and the dirty windshields make it impossible to get a high quality photo. If you are taking part in water activities, this accessory can be a huge relief. My mom once dropped her GoPro while using it in the water and it sunk to the bottom of the ocean. If you’d rather travel with something a little more versatile than a tripod, check out the grip mount. It is a mount with 4 legs of thick and strong rubber twist ties so that you can attach your camera to almost anything. Regular tripods have their downsides when you don’t have a flat and sturdy ground to shoot from, but the grip mount can be adapted and stabilized on random objects nearby. As a bonus, it is also very small, making it even easier to travel with.
I don’t personally have the grip mount yet, however, for my regular camera, I use a gorilla tripod to achieve this exact same effect. I’ve mounted it to railings, small trees, and fences in the past when the regular tripod feature hasn’t been an option.
